Gosoku Ryu – The Science of Modern karate-Do

Gosoku Ryu is best translated as hard- fast style. ‘Gosoku Ryu’ primarily a realistic school with its techniques and philosophy assures survival in the street.

Street fight, a situation where there is no time for courtesies is not unfamiliar to the people of modern society. The student must develop an attitude that he can & will do anything necessary for his survival. In Gosoku Ryu student learns to compress and control his power and harness & direct it with force to devastate his opponent with remarkable speed. ‘Gosoku Ryu’ develops in its students an attitude that he can and he will definitely prevail over and completely disable his opponent without being hurt himself.

‘GO’ means hard & Power, ‘SOKU’ means speed, ‘RYU’ is style. Gosoku Ryu is best translated as Hard & Fast Style. Gosoku Ryu originally developed by Grandmaster Soke Kubota in the 1950’s with his concern of teaching to children and young people of society & his unique ideas. It took several years of relentless work to develop basic structure of Gosoku Ryu karate. Further research and improvement made it the most practical & versatile style of karate.

“Gosoku Ryu’ teaches free style fighting or kumite where student learns to refine & interpret traditional movements according to his own physical and spiritual needs. Always learning and incorporating new skills, he will use these skills freely and spontaneously to effectively counter the opponents lethal attacks.

What makes Gosoku Ryu a unique style over other traditional styles?

Gosoku Ryu style has adaptability for practical needs of 20th century society. Several ideas were instrumental in the development of Gosoku Ryu.

Gosoku Ryu is the perfect blend of Shorin & Shorei styles and thereby in the process creates many of its own unique movements. It has got perfect blend of linear movements utilizing deep stances & hip rotations and fast circular ‘soft’ movements & short stances of traditional styles resulting into a unique characteristic fast circular hard movement & fast footwork that generates tremendous power & speed.

Gosoku Ryu defense is a flowing circular movement using both hands & designed to generate momentum & block several attacks at same time. Its unique footwork is a characteristic trait of Gosoku Ryu. Much of its footwork incorporates switching of the position of feet & hip, causing entire body to rotate & harness power of entire body into the movement of punch/ kick or block.

Gosoku Ryu’s offensive hand technique also utilizes circular movements. At close range circular hand movement attacks are very effectively followed.

All techniques taught in Gosoku Ryu are tested both on street and in karate tournaments. It is a living art that is constantly evolving & adapting to both society & the practitioner. It is unique in that it has the ability to suit to the strengths & weaknesses of practitioners. Each person work the techniques best suited to his or her own body size, build & strength.

Katas, the single most aspect of karate are designed to teach a student that life is movement and movement is life.

“Gosoku Ryu’ katas are a perfect blend of free style techniques and traditional forms which helps him to increase his skill and act as a vehicle to drag something extra from the depth of the psyche, a strength that perhaps has never been revealed before.

Grandmaster Kubota developed & perfected Gosoku Ryu katas over the decades through study, research & teaching. These katas are perfect blend of free style techniques & traditional forms which helps karatekas to increase his skills and act as a vehicle for self development. The emphasis of katas is mainly on the generation of power through speed, quickness of body shifting & footwork; introduction of circular movements & efficiency of techniques. Fast turns & returns, fast foot movements & unique combination of defensive and offensive techniques are some of the distinctive features of Gosoku Ryu katas.
